About Router Bits
Straight router bits are one of the most overlooked styles
of all router bits being used today. One of the most common, straight
router bits have dozens of subcategories with hundreds of uses. CNC Router Bits are straight router bits used in CNC machines. They have their own
classification because these router bits are specially designed for fast
moving, very high RPM machines to move them constantly with very little
time to cool off. This means CNC router bits have to have a durable cutting
edge, be able to remove the excess material efficiently, and be able to
work with the router moving at fairly quick directional speed. Spiral
router bits are designed with several different advantage points. Spiral
router bits can force the excess material they cut down (called downcut
router bits) away from the cutting path, or up (upcut router bits) and
out of the way. Spiral router bits can also be designed to assist in holding
the material while the router bits job is being performed. Many CNC router
bits, including spiral router bits, are made of solid carbide. Solid carbide
router bits, while more expensive in many cases, help to meet he challenge
and demands of sever applications placed upon straight router bits.
Other well known router bits include laminate trim router
bits. As the name implies, these router bits are designed to trim a material
that is overhanging another piece of material you do not wish to cut.
Laminate trim router bits typically come equipped with a bearing to help
flush the cutting surface against the material to be cut without damaging
the underlying material. Edge beading router bits provide a decorative
bead profile. These router bits are commonly used in making furniture
pieces or used as molding router bits. Chamfer router bits, usually in
a 45° angle, are specialty router bits. Also used in furniture applications,
chamfer router bits provide a less harsh look to the corners of a piece
where roundover router bits are not available or not desired. Cove router
bits and bullnose router bits are complete opposites of each other, but
often used in similar applications, the edge of a countertop or to decorate
a table edge. Cove router bits offer a concave or sunken in profile, while
bullnose router bits offer a half circle or half rounded profile.
