About Router Bits
Along with stile and rail router bits, Raised Panel Router Bits are the second component used to create cabinet doors as well as
decorate entry doors. Basic raised panel router bits range from 2 inches
in diameter to 4 inches in some cases. Used to give a decorative profile
to the edge of an inside panel of a cabinet door, raised panel router
bits are used to remove material in a gradual manner toward the center
of the door thus giving the appearance of a raised panel in the door.
Large Raised Panel Router Bits are specially designed router bits used
mainly for entry doors to homes. The much larger cousin to standard raised
panel router bits cut a broader profile and can be used with thicker material.
Larger raised panel router bits are typically very expensive in comparison
to standard raised panel router bits due to the amount of material used
to manufacture them and the great deal of care given to assure their perfect
balance. Router bits which are off balance can do irreparable damage to
the machines they are used in.
Ogee router bits are considered the profile router bits
used in basic decorative moldings and some of the most intricate in cutting
surfaces of the common router bits used. There are several variations
of ogee router bits, each a little different, but still having the basic
underlying ogee router bit pattern. One of the simplest, roman ogee router
bits leave a straight cut close to the surface of the material being cut
and the shape of a backwards letter S toward the bottom. Double ogee router
bits cut a two tier wave pattern into the wood, while the inverted ogee
router bits cut a single, front facing letter S pattern. Classical ogee
router bits also have the profile of a front facing letter S, but is interrupted
by a point at the middle of the pattern. The last of the ogee router bits
is the plunge ogee router bit, very similar to double ogee router bits,
this smaller version offers a cutting tip that allows the user to plunge
it directly into the material rather than approaching from the edge and
working toward the center.
